I’m a big fan of Glyn, and whenever I get the chance hop in the car and drive the fifty miles to Brum to eat his food.
For twenty quid for three courses its top value.
This is my most recent visit

Ok, this is my first review and first experience of a michelin restaurant

got at purnells at just before 1pm for our lunch booking, had a lovely walk from bull ring to cromwell street in the rain smile
could n’t get a menu and no photos as i felt a bit odd trying to take a picture

excellent service form the start,
not drinking at the moment so just a sparkling water with some olives whilst we read the menu (Black olives delicious, green nice but not as good)

were shown to table after about 20mins, where butter was waiting, very simple table lay just cutlery, no salt and pepper

The butter was a perfect scroll on the dish (they whip this and scoop it to order, i know this as my new cdp worked there)
bread was bought out Focacia chopped off loaf and wholemeal rolls, bread was ok but not the best i’ve had
butter was lovely though

the lunch menu £20 3 course £17 2 course is only small being a 2-2-3 affair
so we had one each

i had
Poached Egg yolk, anchovie salad, tapenade and chives

which was cooked to perfection, and the flavours were clean and seperate, 2 issues, it came with a potatoe crisp, which was un seasoned, and it was very small as a dish

the woman had
Bresaola of beef with beetroot textures

this was a little larger and looked stunning, only got to try some beetroot sorbet, which was nice and earthy and light

mains i had Blade of beef, pea custard, and some vegetables

flavour wise i found the jus very sweet but nicely cooked, nice vegetables, pea custard was more pea puree but still nice, could of dome with a little potato

woman had
cod, black pudding crumble and sage

cod tasted a bit old to me, and the black udding crumble was not good at all, just dry bits of black pudding, rather chewy

desserts though were lovely
i had rhubarb and custard tart with rhubarb sorbet
now i love rhubarb and this was lovely, the tart had been bruleed which added a lovely texture and caramel taste to the dish, but i think my sorbet recipe is far nicer than his smile

chocolate truffle, with strawberries and tarragon looked lovely and tasted great, she was very happy with it
never had coffee, as we had to go do some shopping for our holiday

overall, it was a nice meal though a little small on the portions for some one my size, but perfect for my woman who is full after a ritz cracker
i would love to go back and have full a la carte as the plates i saw were far better portions, but i understand he has to make money, but i think it would of made a far more enjoyable meal

Mark

Nice honest review.

intersting review think his food on the GBM is spanking but notice he used nothing as a main ingredient so say, some simple dishes but would still like to eat there. Again god honest review
