Derry worked with Peter Barry in 1972 and returned to Dublin five years later in 1977, where he worked in Le Coq Hardi for four years, under John Howard. He then spent 8 years as Head Chef in le Bon Appetit Restaurant where his aspirations were always to open a place of his own.

Derry won a Michelin star in 2018 and has retained his Michelin Star since 2003.  He has been awarded many accolades over the past eighteen years, such as Best Restaurant and Best Chef Awards since 1999, Best Chef in Ireland in the Good Eating Guide 2015 and Best Chef in Dublin at the Food & Wine Magazine Awards 2015. 


Situated in the heart of bustling Dublin, L'Ecrivain is a well-regarded restaurant with an attractive terrace, a glitzy bar and a private dining room which screens live kitchen action.

Food Style

The refined, balanced menu has a classical foundation whilst also displaying touches of modernity.

Chef patron Derry’s food ethos is simple. He uses the finest of fresh local produce. He believes that a good dish can only be produced when each & every ingredient used for the dish is of the highest of quality. He likes using smaller organic and artisan producers, and is very keen on the promotion of indigenous products.

Chef patron Derry has appeared as a judge alongside Bibi Baskin and Sammy Leslie on the RTÉ One reality television series Fáilte Towers and has appeared on other programmes such as The Restaurant, The Afternoon Show and The Panel.

He has written two successful cookbooks, 'Not Just Another Cookbook' and 'Keeping it Simple'. The recipes confirm his commitment to the very best local, fresh produce cooked with flair and imagination.  

Derry has also contributed recipes for many publications including the Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Food and Wine Magazine, Easy Food Magazine, Hospitality Ireland, the Sunday Times and The Daily Mail.

Personal Life

Derry and Sallyanne married in 1987 and opened l'Ecrivain Restaurant in July 1989.  They have had several transformations and now l'Ecrivain stands on the site of two old Georgian Coach Houses/Mews in its own charming courtyard.

Derry underwent a double bypass in 2013 after he was warned he was in danger of suffering a heart attack due to a family history of cardiac problems. He has since had a strong focus on health, fitness and wellbeing.
