What are the most googled food terms worldwide?

Over 3.5 billion Google searches are made per day! But how many of these searches are food-related, and more importantly – which recipes and food terms have been the most searched for on the web in the past year?

Where on earth would we be without the internet? “Not sure, google it” … An expression that most of us have become accustomed to using day-by-day over the past decade or two. Reportedly around 3.5 billion searches are made per day on the internet search engine, that’s over 40,000 per second. Besides your average how to’s, memes, cat videos and Kim Kardashians, we’ve been researching the world’s most googled food terms, curious to see which recipes and ingredients are most explored. Here’s what we found:

5) Have your cake and eat it

Perhaps the world’s most popular sweet dessert, ‘cake recipes’ takes the spot of the fifth most googled food term from the last 12 months, and we can certainly see why. Who doesn’t love a good cake?

Whether it’s a classic Victoria sponge to go with a cuppa’ after work, a calorific chocolate fudge cake on cheat-day, or even a four-storey iced Wedding cake to celebrate tying the knot. Considering there are a thousand different ways to bake and enjoy cakes, it’s quite plausible to say that there must be at least one type of cake out there for anybody. Not to mention, the vast majority of cakes can be made using cheap, easy access ingredients -traditionally flour, butter, sugar and eggs.

4) How do I make French Toast?

Ranked at number 4 is another easy-to-make treat, perfect for breakfast or brunch. French toast or ‘eggy bread’ was a recipe in the Roman cookbook Apicius, which dates back as far as the 1st Century AD. It can be made using slices of white bread dipped in a mix of eggs & milk - then fried. You can add a variety of toppings to spice things up. Bacon, fruit, or both is usually a go-to.  A splash of golden syrup also works miracles as an added extra.

3) What is Poğaça?

Turkish Poğaça, most commonly made as a breakfast pastry, is served all across the world in bakeries, cafes and restaurants. It comes as no surprise that this eat-on-the-go meal is a top trending food recipe since it can be cooked and served in a variety of different methods. Although in its native regions Poğaça is baked in the ashes of a fireplace, then later in the oven, there are many ways to cook Turkish bread using simple kitchen methods. A tasty, light and fluffy, savoury breakfast, garnished with herbs and stuffed with anything from potato, cheeses or meats, this one’s a winner for sure.

Beeftastic!

2) What's your Beef?

An extremely popular ingredient across nearly all nations, ground beef takes number 2 on the list. Yet again, this is an inexpensive, easy access food that can be the foundation for some of the worlds most loved meals such as tacos, lasagna, pasta, chilli, burgers, pies… the list goes on and on.

So, in the past year what food term have the human race been searching for more than anything else in the world? It has been said that there are more established meals than there are atoms in the universe, so this one must be pretty popular.

Drum roll please…

1) Chicken Breast

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Well, we’re still not sure, but in terms of high-ranking google searches, chicken beats them ALL. Besides the fact that there are around 25 billion chickens on earth, more than any bird species, this high-nutrient, low in calorie, protein-packed, delicious meat is perfect for any weight loss meal plan – a continually growing trend across the globe.

In addition to this, chicken breast is incredibly easy to cook. With the top related queries being ‘instant-pot chicken breast’, ‘air-fryer chicken breast’ and ‘sous vide chicken breast’, it seems that a recurring theme across this entire list is simplistic, quick and easy cooking. Plus, they all make for some pretty awesome meals!
