Award-winning chefs serve up showstoppers in Edinburgh cook-off
Some of Scotland’s best chefs are sharpening their knives for the ultimate kitchen showdown in Edinburgh.
Battle of the Chefs takes place on May 4, as part of the Edinburgh Seafood Festival at food hall Bonnie Wild.
Six chefs will go head-to-head, including National Chef of Scotland Gary Maclean and chef Jimmy Lee, each tasked with serving up impressive dishes for 80 invited guests.
Joining Gary and Jimmy are four chefs who know their way around a high-pressure kitchen. Suki Jayaratne and Shehan Fernando of Kochchi have already taken home UK and Scottish Street Food awards for their bold Sri Lankan flavours.
Nick Watkins of El Perro Negro is known for his award-winning burgers, having scooped UK Burger of the Year twice and recently being named Burger Chef of the Year.
Ivan Stein, co-founder of the acclaimed The Gannet, is now bringing the heat with his latest venture Chooks, at Bonnie & Wild.
Each chef will prepare a dish that shows off their signature style, aiming to impress diners and judges alike in the hope of taking home the title of ‘Bonniest Chef.’
Gary Maclean said: “One of the very best things about Bonnie & Wild is the collaborative, convivial atmosphere we have here. This Battle of the Chefs event is all about putting on some great food with some great people, and everyone having a bit of fun, friendly competition.”
Shehan Fernando hinted at big flavours to come, he added: “We’ll be whipping up a fresh take on Sri Lankan food, and offering a modern Scottish homage to Sri Lankan comfort food. Expect bold spice, punchy flavours, and something a little unexpected on the plate. And of course, we will be bringing the fire, literally. Let’s just say our Roast Pan Stack might steal the show… unless someone brings a blowtorch!”
Nick Watkins added, “I can’t wait to go head-to-head with the other chefs. It gives us a wee opportunity to show off what we can do. As ever, the beef will be front and centre in what we’re doing. The heat is on and the pressure is definitely building!”
Battle of the Chefs takes place at Bonnie & Wild, St James Quarter, on May 4.
