British Sausage Week is an annual celebration of the taste, quality and diversity of the traditional British Banger. From sausage dishes from around the world to the quality of British sausage meat means we have lots to shout – but how do you like your sausage? 

Though it may look ordinary, the sausage is surrounded by many interesting facts; so this British Sausage week we thought we would gather the best. From world records to celebrities here are ten things you might not have known about sausages:

1) The word “sausage” comes from the French “sauchisse”, which derives from the Latin word “salsisium” meaning something salted.

2) Neumarkt, Germany, is home to a Sausage Academy which trains students into sausage experts, learning which sausages are best accompanied by which sauces, drinks and even music.

The country’s capital has The Deutsche Currywurst Museum, where visitors can try samples and see educational exhibits on Berlin’s speciality sausage.

3) The longest sausage ever made was 36.75 miles long, and had the mammoth weight of two African elephants. This eighth wonder of the world was fashioned by J.J. Tranfield for Asda Stores Plc in Sheffield. It was created over three painstaking days in 2000.

4) The world record for most sausages eaten in one minute was won in 2001 by Stefan Paladin of New Zealand, who ate eight ten-centimetre sausages in 60 seconds. Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi broke a similar world record in 2012 by eating 110 sausages in ten minutes.

5) Britain boasts over 470 varieties of sausage, many of them regional.

6) 5 million Britons will eat sausages on any given day, although research has found that Saturday is the peak day for sausage consumption.

7) Sausages are responsible for roughly 864 million meals per year in Britain, which is more than chicken and minced beef contribute to. Indeed, around 250,000 tonnes of sausages are consumed in Britain each year, and about half a billion pounds are spent on them annually.

8) Katie Price and Peter Andre served sausage and mash at their wedding reception, and Kate Winslet served them at her wedding breakfast.

9) The most expensive sausages ever sold in the UK were priced at £20 a packet, and were made of fillet steak, truffle and champagne.

10) Sausages were banned by the Catholic Church in the 4th century, as they believed the consumption of sausages to be associated with Pagan rituals. As a result, the production and enjoyment of sausages went underground until the ban was lifted.
