Chatime the purveyors of Taiwanese bubble teas are set to open their eleventh UK store this April in Shoreditch, East London.

Chatime is already renowned for their range of styles and varieties of this unique and colourful refreshment, the opening of this new store will see the launch of an innovative boutique menu with a selection for first time buyers as well as classic favourites readily available for customers already familiar with the brand.

Peter Wong, founder of Chatime UK comments “We are all very excited about welcoming the people of East London in to try our delicious selection of bubble teas. We’re thrilled to have secured a site in the heart of this up-and-coming area and we look forward to further UK expansion later this year.”

So what is bubble tea?

Put simply, bubble tea is a tea-based beverage – which can be served both ice-cold and piping hot. This innovative take on tea was created in the 1980s by the street vendors of Taiwan, and keen as they were to experiment with bold new flavours and alluring colours in order to attract more trade and stay ahead of competitors, the bubble tea repertoire expanded brightly and rapidly.

But where do the bubbles come in?

Also known as pearl milk tea or boba milk tea, the word ‘bubble’ is actually an Anglicisation of ‘boba,’ which means ‘large’ and refers to the oversized and chewy tapioca balls that you’ll often see added to this revitalising and often filling drink.

Most recipes for bubble tea involve a tea base, mixed with fruit or milk. Slushy-style versions of bubble tea are also available at Chatime, made with ice and blended with syrup or fruit for an extra refreshing drink.

The opening in Shoreditch will also introduce a fresh approach for Chatime in terms of the atmosphere and ambience of its stores. This new look will encourage customers to relax as they enjoy their bubble tea, combining earthy, neutral tones and a Scandinavian influence with the classic, chic look of Chatime.

The launch of this store is set to mark the beginning of a rebrand across all UK stores, introducing a new look for Chatime that will match the innovative and original spirit of its bubble tea.
