Frédéric Panaïotis, renowned Ruinart cellar master, dies at 60
The hospitality industry is in mourning following the tragic death of Frédéric Panaïotis, the esteemed Cellar Master of Ruinart.
Frederic passed away on Sunday, 15 June in a diving accident, according to L’Union.
The 60 year old was a widely respected figure in the wine industry,
Born into a family of Champenois winegrowers in Villers-Marmery, Frederic’s connection to the vine began early.
According to the Union des Maisons de Champagne, he was already helping harvest Chardonnay grapes as a child, learning the rhythms of the cellar long before he pursued winemaking professionally.
Earlier this year Le Figaro asked who might one day succeed him. His characteristically optimistic response: “Ask me again in six years, in 2029, when we’ll be celebrating the 300th anniversary of the house.”
In a statement, Maison Ruinart described him as “a key figure in Champagne - and in wine more broadly – and a colleague appreciated by all. His accidental passing leaves us with profound sadness.”
A post on social media from Moet Hennessy read: “It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the sudden passing of Frédéric Panaïotis, Cellar Master of Maison Ruinart.
