"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have decided to close Joanna's"
London's family-run restaurant Joanna's Crystal has closed after more trading for more than 45 years of trading citing challenges posed by "current economic conditions".
The american diner and neighbourhood restaurant located in London's Crystal Palace was founded by husband and wife John and Christina Ellner in 1978.
In 1985, the bakery next door was transformed into a second dining room, featuring wooden panelling, a reception booth and a private room was added over subsequent years.
In the 2022 edition of Harden's Guide, the restaurant was described as always serving an "excellent experience, be it for brunch, lunch or dinner".
The current owner, Will Ellner, posted on Instagram: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have decided to close Joanna's. Friday service was our last up here on the Triangle in Crystal Palace. The restaurant has been a second home to so many of you over the last 45 years. Colleagues and guests celebrating birthdays, engagements, weddings, anniversaries, and more."
Citing the current climate for hospitality operators, Will added: "Current economic conditions are creating huge difficulties, especially in the hospitality industry, and these challenges are unfortunately too much for us as a small business to overcome which has led me to make this difficult decision."
He thanked the "enthusiasm and love" from his loyal customers that "made Joanna's such a unique and special place".
Reacting to Joanna's closure, Llewelyn's in London's Herne Hill commented: "This is such sad news. My earliest memories of being in a restaurant are at Joanna's. You'll be so missed!"
