The list of restaurants included in this year’s German Michelin Guide have been published after yesterday’s awards ceremony, delivering 42 new accolades including five new two star restaurants.

The guide now totals 309 starred restaurants, including 261 with one star, 38 with two and ten with three Michelin stars.

A total of 37 new restaurants received their first stars, including Berlin dessert bar CODA, twelve-seater seasonal restaurant Ernst, and fusion restaurant, SAVU.

Five restaurants received two stars: among these, chef Christian Eckhardt’s Purs, in Andernach made its entry into the guide, joined by Luce d’Oro in Krün, Alexander Herrmann by Tobias Bätz in Wirsberg, Ox & Klee in Cologne and Sosein, in Heroldsberg.

Director of the Michelin Guide for Germany and Switzerland, Ralf Flinkenflügel told Der Spiegel that contrary to what one might think, "We have not changed our criteria, it's simply because we [Germans] cook better" than before.

"There are more and more young chefs who have fresh ideas and bring new momentum to top German gastronomy," he said.

Last year’s guide featured 11 three-star restaurants, and ten have kept their accolades, as La Vie in Osnabrück closed last year.

Additionally, 39 restaurants were added to the guide’s Bib Gourmand list, which recognises restaurants serving high-quality food at affordable prices, bringing the total to 429.
