Chef Mark Poynton, fresh from winning a Michelin star at his Norwich restaurant, Mark Poynton at Caistor Hall is set to open a new venture just outside Cambridge.

On July 16, he will launch The Ancient Shepherds in Fen Ditton, partnering with local residents Gareth and Emma John.

Located on the site of his former restaurant, MJP @ The Shepherds, the new venue marks an exciting next chapter.

The Ancient Shepherds will offer a tasting menu-only restaurant with rooms, combining fine food with relaxed, village charm.

Mark was awarded a Michelin Star at the 2025 Michelin Guide Awards earlier this year.

A Community-Driven Partnership

Gareth and Emma, who have lived in Fen Ditton for over 20 years, were long-time fans of Mark’s cooking, dating back to his Alimentum days in 2009. Passionate about preserving the spirit of MJP @ The Shepherds, they’ve joined forces to safeguard its future.

Refined Food, Sustainable Approach

The kitchen will be led by Mark and his new head chef Chris Lee, formerly of The Bildeston Crown. The menu will change regularly and focus on minimising food waste while maximising creativity and guest experience. Dishes will showcase ingredients from the restaurant’s kitchen garden, with trusted suppliers providing the rest.

Menus will come in three, five, or seven-course formats, including snacks, bread, and amuse bouche. Summer dishes will feature the likes of:

Staff will work a four-day week, with set holidays built into the restaurant calendar to ensure a healthy work-life balance - something Mark is passionate about fostering.

Design and Accommodation

Housed in a former pub dating back to 1580, The Ancient Shepherds has undergone a careful refurbishment by Emma John, retaining its historic charm.

The space includes a lounge for pre and post-dinner drinks, and seating for up to 34 guests. Five stylish, minimalist bedrooms are also available to book - with or without dining - making it an ideal spot for a food-led getaway or a relaxed stay near Cambridge.
