Hello Plant Foods says its vegan product Furah! has sold out across Spain despite the product only launching in mid-December 2022.

Following a taste test carried out by more than 150 people, the plant-based take on foie gras Furah! entered the Spanish in market with 5,000 units distributed to supermarkets and speciality stores before the holiday season.

12 hours into its launch in mid-December Hello Plant Foods reported its vegan product had sold out across Spain before restocking an additional 30,000 units, which before long also sold out across the country.

Speaking to the Guardian newspaper, Hello Plant Foods Founder, Javier Fernández, explained: “We’re absolutely gobsmacked. Our plan was to start slowly … but we’ve just increased our production sevenfold. It’s crazy.”

Javier confirmed to the newspaper that since the early success of Furah! in Spain, inquiries have poured in from across Europe and the US, catching the company off guard.

“We weren’t expecting any of this. We hadn’t really done any advertising,” he told the Guardian.

Fuah! is the latest high-profile plant-based vegan alternative seeking to take on foie gras.

Two years ago in Paris, Chef Fabien Borgel launched a similar product called ‘faux gras’ adding to a wave of new vegan recipes that have since sprung up online in recent years.

It comes after foie gras has been on the receiving end of a raft of bad publicity after King Charles announced in November 2022 that the product would not be served in royal residences.

The production of foie gras has been a controversial subject and one slammed by animal rights activists.

The process which involves the liver of a duck or goose fattened by force-feeding is often labelled as cruel and torturous by campaigners, however producers of the product have argued that when done properly, the animals do not suffer.
