This week is British Sausage Week, which is a great opportunity to look back and see what has been happening since Sausage Week 2014. 

There is no question that the UK has some very dedicated sausage lovers. The number of events that have taken place since last national sausage week is huge, so we chose some of the most sizzling news for you. Get ready, some of them are very odd!

Rugby World Cup Sausage

Starting from the most recent, the farm shop near Duffield has launched two tasty types of sausage made from the best quality meat in celebration of Rugby World Cup. We already had ‘Olympig’ sausage and football inspired ‘Bangerooney’ sausages. The butchers from Croots are not only creative Rugby lovers but the sales of the sausages will contribute to the fundraising for the Derbyshire Children Holiday Centre.

Sausage Extravaganza

There is also good news for the more extravagant sausage lovers who like to explore new flavours.  Butcher Kenny Milne from Blackburn, Aberdeen created Jagerbomb and Red Bull flavoured sausages after being influenced by his young trainee jokingly asking about it. The rumour is that customers can’t get enough of them.

‘Dausage’?

Speaking about experimenting with flavours, Liam Bennet, inspired by the success of ‘cronut’- a mixture of half croissant and doughnut, created the ‘dausage’- a sausage filled with the choice of jam or custard.  Liam says that despite the idea not being perceived well at the beginning, once people try it they love it. Curious to taste it? The owner is now working on plans to expand his business nationwide.

New Record

A new record was set for the most sausages produced in one minute. The record was made by Alistair Paul from A and I Quality Butchers in Inverness, who managed to produce 36 sausages in one minute. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness over the commitment and skills of local butchers.

Sausage Festival

There is no doubt that sausage itself gets attention and plenty of awareness. This was proved two weeks ago when thousands of hungry people took part in the biggest annual sausage festival. The Lincoln Festival took place on 24 October, where there was good music, art shows, children’s plays, cooking demonstrations and of course plenty of sausages.

Holy Grail for butchers

Exactly one year ago a tour bus travelled 650 miles to meet the region’s best butchers at venues in London, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Reading, Peterborough and Bristol. From more than 500 entries nationwide each region was whittled down to the top six butchers, who were then invited to the final, where one butcher from each category won the Banger Award.
