Gary Usher to take part in first Chef's Lunch with Angela Hartnett’s Murano

Angela Hartnett’s Michelin-starred Murano is to host a series of chef's lunch events starting with Sticky Walnut’s Gary Usher, who previously worked with Angela at York and Albany.

Starting on the 12th April Angela, Murano’s head chef Pip Lacey and Gary will collaborate to create a five course menu with tickets priced at £100.

The series will then continue with lunches hosted by well-known chefs, including Mitch Tonks, Emily Watkins and Mary-Ellen McTague. Taking the decision to leave working for Angela Hartnett at York and Albany, Gary Usher took over a run-down restaurant in Chester and turned it into a successful bistro with a funny name.

However Sticky Walnut is a name that has stuck (excuse the pun) as four years later Gary and his team are now opening restaurant number two – Burnt Truffle – after a kickstarter campaign exceeded expectations and made it possible.

He cites Angela as someone who had a great impact on him and his career, as she helped Gary when he first said he wanted to own his own business. Speaking to us previously he said: “I was really open about the fact that I wanted to learn about business as well as cooking and, as I wanted to open a bistro, I thought I had enough food knowledge; but the thing that I was lacking was the business side of things. Angela said that she could teach me all of that.”

Angela Hartnett, MBE, is one of the UK’s most loved chefs and restaurateurs, known for her sophisticated yet simple, Italy-inspired cooking.

Serving modern, seasonal food with an Italian accent, her Michelin-starred restaurant, Murano, is one of the few restaurants to hold 4 AA rosettes and was included in the Good Food Guide’s Top 50 restaurants for 2015.

In September 2013 Angela launched the critically acclaimed Merchants Tavern in Shoreditch, in collaboration with head chef Neil Borthwick, and Canteen founders, Dominic Lake and Patrick Clayton-Malone.

In November of that year she opened the similarly championed Café Murano, a relaxed little sister to Murano, where she creates the menu with Sam Williams as head chef.
