Michelin-starred restaurant The Glasshouse to close after 23 years

The Glasshouse located in Kew will close its doors next month after it opened to the public in 1999

The Michelin-starred restaurant announced on its website "with great sadness" that it would close on 17 September after 23 years of trading.

It added: "We would like to thank all of our wonderful guests and employees for supporting us over this period."

In 2002, the restaurant received a Michelin star three years after opening. In February 2018, Greg Wellman joined The Glasshouse as Head Chef.

Owned by Nigel Platts-Martin and Bruce Poole, who operate Michelin-starred London restaurants Chez Bruce in Wandsworth and La Trompette in Chiswick.

The restaurant is known for serving dishes such as roasted and shaved cauliflower with cashew milk, black truffle and soused king oyster mushrooms; and crisp sea bream with chorizo picante, borlotti beans, courgettes, chilli, anchovy and garlic.

Government warned of further closures

The Glasshouse's closure follows fears that more restaurants will close across the country following soaring energy prices and a lack of support from the government.

Earlier this month, various industry bodies wrote to the prime minister, Boris Johnson, the Chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi and the Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng cautioning that thousands of jobs are at “grave risk” unless support was offered.
