Glasgow’s Michelin-starred Cail Bruich was stormed by animal rights protestors this weekend, following the restaurant's refusal to cater for vegans.

Scottish media reported that seven individuals from the Animal Rising group interrupted service at the restaurant on Glasgow’s Great Western Road in the early evening on Saturday 20 May.

Protestors entered the restaurant before occupying tables reserved for customers whilst displaying placards highlight the conditions inside UK farms.

As a result, police were called to the Cail Bruich, with five of the seven activists arrested and placed into custody.

Following the disturbance, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.55pm on Saturday, 20 May, 2023, officers were called to a business address on Great Western Road, Glasgow following reports of a peaceful protest within.”

It added: “The group were given advice and asked to leave the premises. When they refused, five people were arrested and removed. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Scotland’s Daily Record newspaper reported that protestors targeted the restaurant for its "meat-heavy menu”, following similar sit-ins occurring across the UK including; Gordon Ramsay’s three Michelin-starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Simon Martin's Michelin-starred Mana, and Salt Bae’s London Nusr-Et Steakhouse.

Located beside the historical Scottish city's Botanical Gardens, Cail Bruich is a longstanding family-run business specialising in traditional Scottish dishes using contemporary techniques.

Meaning ‘to eat well’ in Gaelic, the restaurant has one Michelin Star, three AA Rosettes and figures in the Good Food Guide's Top 50 Restaurants in the UK.

Leading the kitchen is Head Chef Lorna McNee who joined the restaurant in 2020 after working at Scotland’s only two Michelin starred restaurant, Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles Hotel.
