On October 25, 2017 the delayed release of the San Francisco 2018 edition was finally announced revealing one new three star, two new two stars and four new one star restaurants.

In this year’s guide the modern seafood restaurant, Coi based in North Beach was bumped up to three star status. The restaurant is now under the guidance of chef Matthew Kirkley who took over at the helm in January 2016 following Daniel Patterson’s departure.

Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guide said: “Our inspectors have been following chef Kirkley since his days at L20 in Chicago, and we were thrilled to see that he is at the summit of his art.

“We were truly impressed by his artistry and his team’s ability to produce sublime dishes based on local ingredients like abalone, oysters and seafood.”

Contemporary Mexican hotspot Californios and SingleThread in Sonoma are the newest additions to the two star category. Californios is the first US restaurant serving Mexican cuisine to earn two stars.

In the one star category, four restaurants earn stars for the first time including In Situ, Kenzo, Rich Table and Kinjo.

The original guide was due to be released on October 12 but was pushed back following the devastation left from wildfires that spread across the San Francisco Bay area destroying restaurants, wineries and farms.

Speaking of the decision to hold back the release, Claire Dorland-Clauzel, Michelin Group executive vice president of the Michelin Guide said: “America’s Wine Country has experienced an extraordinary tragedy and our decision to delay the 2018 selections was made with the deepest concern for those affected.”

With the new 2018 selection seven restaurants now have three stars, seven have two and a further 41 now make up the list of one stars. Elsewhere Michelin also recognised 67 restaurants throughout the San Francisco Bay Area & Wine Country with Bib Gourmands.

The Michelin Guide San Francisco 2018 will be available from Friday, October 27 at a suggested retail price of $18.99.
