Homemade cocktails are the UK’s favourite Christmas drink, according to a poll by Waitrose Cellar.

The study of 1000 UK respondents, called ‘Festive Favourites’, also found that Buck’s Fizz is the nation’s favourite alcoholic mixed drink, with 32 per cent of the votes, followed by Irish coffee, with 26 per cent. Mulled wine came third place with 25 per cent.

Other cocktails on the list included gin and tonic, eggnog, buttered rum, mojito and Kir Royal.

In the straight up alcoholic drinks category, Baileys and red wine are the UK’s joint favourites, with 20 per cent of the vote each. Champagne came in second place, with 18 per cent, followed by white wine, with 13 per cent. In fourth place was Prosecco.

The survey also asked people on their favourite food and wine pairings, finding that mince pies and mulled wine topped the list, with 25 per cent. Second was the pairing of Buck’s Fizz with scrambled eggs and salmon, with 7 per cent.

Favourite Christmas drinks also vary with age, the poll found. Champagne is the favourite of those under 25, while 25-54 year olds prefer Irish cream liqueur. In the 55+ age group, red wine came out on top.
