We feature some of the best chef’s in the world on The Staff Canteen but where would they be without their kitchen porter?

We thought it was time to celebrate the unsung heroes of the kitchen in a new monthly feature, KP of the Month, and this month it is Alexander Howarth who currently works at the Michelin-starred Box Tree Restaurant and was nominated by sous chef, Steven Southern, who said: "I nominated Alex because he has worked so many extra shifts, even on days he was supposed to have study time, as he's doing his A levels. He never complains about it, always cracks on and has a good laugh at the same time. His attitude for his age is just fantastic."

How long have you worked at the Box Tree restaurant for?

I have worked at the Boxtree Restaurant for six months.

Why did you want to be a KP?

Originally to get some extra money to help with studies, but I’ve grown to really enjoy being in the kitchen.

Are you interested in cooking or happy to stay as a KP?

As a hobby definitely, but I couldn’t dream of doing the long shifts day in, day out.

What is it like to work at the Boxtree Restaurant and what is head chef Kieran like as a boss?

Hard work but very enjoyable and Kieran is firm but fair. There's a lot of good banter and he's very easy to work with.

As a KP, what’s the most annoying thing chefs do in the kitchen?

They leave spoons in my sink all the time!

Heaven

It has to be the banter and the Sunday morning sing-offs.

Hell

Getting up early in the morning on a Sunday.

Is there anything chefs could do to make your life easier?

Use less plastics because they’re a pain to wash!

And do you get to try the food? That must be a perk!

Yes, it definitely is a big, big perk!

Do you have a favourite dish you have tried at the restaurant?

Definitely the goats cheese and beetroot starter. I love how it looks and the balance is amazing.

Would you encourage other chefs to nominate and celebrate their KPs?

Yes definitely, it’s put a big smile on my face today when Steve told me he’d nominated me!
