We feature some of the best chefs in the world on The Staff Canteen but where would they be without their kitchen porter?

We thought it was time to celebrate the unsung heroes of the kitchen in a new monthly feature, KP of the Month, and this month it is Kale Diop Diaban who currently works at Andi's restaurant in London.

Kale was nominated by Andi Oliver, co-owner, Andi's Restaurant, who said: "Our KP Kale is now our brunch chef! The man is a marvel, he is always calm and has a smile for everyone when he was up to his elbows in washing pots and now when he's got 20 tickets on at once he has never raised his voice or let us down. He is now inspiring the next generation of KP's who all want to rise through the ranks like Kale and learn to cook. And by the way, his brunch plates are perfect. He is the backbone of our business and we love him."

Career as a KP 

How long have you worked at Andi's Restaurant for?

I have been here for about six months now.

Why did you want to be a KP?

Just to improve myself and keep learning from other chefs and to gain more experience.

Are you interested in cooking or happy to stay as a KP?

I'm interested in cooking and learning more, I’m already cooking a lot!

What is it like to work at Andi's, and what is Andi like as a boss?

She is a very nice person and very respectful.

As a KP, what’s the most annoying thing chefs do in the kitchen?

When they put food in the sink.

Is there anything chefs could do to make your life easier?

Just to be more flexible during the job and being helpful.

And do you get to try the food? That must be a perk!

I only try the food sometimes.

Do you have a favourite dish you have tried at the restaurant?

Yes! My favourite is the buttermilk chicken energy bowl.

Would you encourage other chefs to nominate and celebrate their KPs?

Yes because it is a way to appreciate the job they are doing and it also gonna make them work harder!
