We feature some of the best chef’s in the world on The Staff Canteen but where would they be without their kitchen porter?

We thought it was time to celebrate the unsung heroes of the kitchen in a new monthly feature, KP of the Month, and this month it is Susan Rawles who currently works at The Station Kitchen, Bridport Dorset. Susan was nominated by general manager, Oliver Christopher, who said: “I have chosen to nominate our wonderful KP Sue, as she is a person who brings so much to the team. Always happy, always singing (she’s a rock chick and has a load of T-Rex CDs she listens to whilst working) genuinely cares about everyone in the building. One example, I had terrible mouth ulcers over Christmas from being run-down, and upon hearing this she produced mouth ulcer pastilles and mouth ulcer specific mouthwash from her magic box in the kitchen! She told me to take them home and to use them until they cleared up, she's prepared for every occasion! All of us here at the Station kitchen love her to pieces.”

How long have you worked at Station Kitchen for?

I have been with Station Kitchen since November 1, 2016.

Why did you want to be a KP?

My Grandson, who is the apprentice chef, asked me to come and help out for the day and I’ve been here ever since!

Are you interested in cooking or happy to stay as a KP?

Both, I do a little bit of prep when it’s needed.

What is it like to work at Station Kitchen and what is Oliver like as a boss?

I’m happy as hell, love him to bits and love them all down there!

As a KP, what’s the most annoying thing chefs do in the kitchen?

They don’t annoy me, they amuse me!

KP Heaven and Hell

Heaven

Working with the team.

Hell

I don’t dislike anything, I’m happy with everything.  It’s a nice environment to work in.

Is there anything chefs could do to make your life easier?

No, I’m happy with everything.

And do you get to try the food? That must be a perk!

Yes, I do indeed.

Do you have a favourite dish you have tried at the restaurant?

The poached salmon and prawns starter, and the cod thermidor main, and the award-winning sherry and almond trifle!

Would you encourage other chefs to nominate and celebrate their KPs?

Yes they should.
