Georgia Sommerin, Senior Sous Chef at Home by James Sommerin, is one of four chefs competing for the Wales region  on Great British Menu 2023.

Series 18 of the competition starts on January 31 2023 on BBC Two at 8pm and will air for eight weeks.

Georgia is going head to head with chefs Tom Westerland, Mark Threadgill and Simmie Vedi in a bid to represent the Wales in the regional finals, and ultimately cook a dish at the final banquet.

This is Georgia's second time competing in Great British Menu, after first competing in the programmne in 2020.

Her involvement in programme made her the youngest competitor to appear on Great British Menu.

Biography

From Penarth, South Wales should not to be underestimated as she’s been working in a professional kitchen since the age of 13 and full time since 2016 under the watchful eye of her father, Michelin starred chef James Sommerin.

Initially Georgia wanted to make some pocket money but she soon fell in love with cooking as a career. Georgia is out to prove herself on her own terms with her classic cooking inspired by the local Welsh produce.

Her dad James said: "I have always hoped and wished that one of our girls would follow in my footsteps and that wish came true with our eldest daughter, Georgia."

Home By James Sommerin

James Sommerin's Home is a family affair, with food served by Louise and one of their two other daughters, Angharad (the youngest, Elin, is only 11), as well as Louise's twin sister Cath.

The windows are blacked out, guests must ring the bell to be granted access, and once inside they are made to feel like they are being welcomed to the Sommerins' home.

The family-feeling extends to the layout of the restaurant, which seats 24 with the kitchen set dead centre in the dining room, giving the whole restaurant a chef's service experience.

A surprise eight-course menu, priced at £98 a head, reflects the seasons and the best meat, fish, fruit, veg and even wine available from local suppliers. A four or eight-course lunch is also available on Fridays and Saturdays.

In an interview with The Guardian reflecting on winning a star for Home, James said: “It’s more special than it ever was before.”

“Just purely because it’s us as a unit, there are no other investors, no business partners, no nothing. We are running it solely and it’s such a huge achievement.”
