Gordon Ramsay, Marco Pierre White and Heston Blumenthal will reunite for a new BBC documentary series exploring how their ambition, rivalry and pursuit of Michelin stars transformed British fine dining.

The Rise of the Rockstar Chef will chart the careers of three of the UK’s most influential chefs and examine how they helped establish modern British cooking on the global stage.

The three-part series, commissioned for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, will be produced by Studio Ramsay Global and broadcast later this year.

The Rise of the Rockstar Chef

Set against the cultural backdrop of Britain during the 1990s and 2000s, the series will explore the period in which Marco, Gordon and Heston became three of the most recognisable figures in the restaurant industry.

It will examine their restaurants, working methods and uncompromising pursuit of excellence, alongside the fights, fall-outs and rivalries that unfolded as they competed for critical recognition and Michelin stars.

Testimony from the chefs will be supported by contributions from food critics, maîtres d’, commis chefs and other people who witnessed significant moments in their careers.

The series will culminate in a reunion between Marco, Gordon and Heston as they reflect on their shared history and the effect they had on British restaurants.

Catherine Catton, the BBC’s head of commissioning for factual entertainment and events, said: “Decades ago, Marco, Gordon and Heston ripped up the rule-book of British fine dining and changed the world of restaurants forever.

“I’m delighted they’re reuniting to bring BBC audiences the truly extraordinary story behind their fierce rivalry, uncompromising ambition and, at times, truly outrageous antics.”

Three chefs who changed British restaurants

Marco became the youngest chef at the time to be awarded three Michelin stars, achieving the milestone at The Restaurant Marco Pierre White before returning his stars and stepping away from the kitchen.

Gordon worked under Marco at Harveys before building his own restaurant group. Restaurant Gordon Ramsay opened in Chelsea in 1998 and has held three Michelin stars since 2001.

Heston developed a different approach at The Fat Duck in Bray, combining cooking with scientific research, psychology and multisensory experiences. The restaurant was awarded its third Michelin star in 2004.

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and The Fat Duck remain among the UK’s 10 three-Michelin-starred restaurants in the 2026 Michelin Guide.

The Staff Canteen recently marked 30 years of The Fat Duck by exploring Heston’s influence and the dishes that helped redefine expectations of British fine dining.

‘The real heat was not just in the kitchen’

Lisa Edwards, chief creative officer and executive producer at Studio Ramsay Global, said the series would place the chefs’ rise within the wider cultural changes taking place in Britain.

She said: “Nineties and noughties nostalgia is at an all-time high for both those of us who were there and those that weren’t – the heady mix of an uprising in fashion, politics and music makes it a decade like no other.

“But there was another rock and roll revolution happening in the UK.

“It was the decade that really put British food on the map, led by the original rockstar chefs, Marco, Gordon and Heston.

“It’s the story of rivalry and the pursuit of perfection where the real heat was not just in the kitchen.”

The Rise of the Rockstar Chef will be directed and produced by Zoë Dobson, with Lisa and Amanda Westwood serving as executive producers. A confirmed broadcast date has not yet been announced.
