2 Michelin star chefs: Jason Atherton & Spencer Metzger, Row On 5
Jason Atherton, one of the UK’s most celebrated chefs, is chef patron of Row on 5 in Mayfair - a 15-course tasting menu restaurant on Savile Row.
In collaboration with executive chef Spencer Metzger, Jason's restaurant earned its second Michelin star in February 2026.
Early Career and Training
Jason began his culinary career at 16, training under renowned chefs Pierre Koffmann, Marco Pierre White and Gordon Ramsay. After rising through the ranks, he became executive chef at Maze, where he earned critical acclaim for his innovative approach to modern European cuisine.
Opening Row on 5 in Mayfair
In late 2024, Jason unveiled his most personal and ambitious project to date: Row on 5. Situated at No. 5 Savile Row in Mayfair – the first restaurant to occupy this historic street celebrated for bespoke tailoring – Row on 5 is built around the concept of “Refinement of Work".
The restaurant offers a 15‑course tasting menu served across three acts, with guests moving between the lounge, the main dining room and back to the lounge for dessert. The intimate, 28‑seat space takes inspiration from the craftsmanship of Savile Row, combining meticulous British sourcing with theatrical presentation.
Jason leads Row on 5 as chef patron alongside executive chef Spencer Metzger, formerly of The Ritz and Row on 45 in Dubai. The interiors, designed with Smallbone and Occhio, reflect the same precision and artistry found in the food, from bespoke kitchens to dramatic lighting and a service style tailored to the guest.
The rise of Spencer Metzger
Spencer first entered the kitchen at The Ritz London aged 15 on work experience, later returning after college training and building his career there over 13 years.
In 2015, Spencer left The Ritz for a spell at Simon Rogan’s (then two Michelin-starred) L’Enclume, before returning in 2017 as premier sous chef and progressing to head chef in July 2021.
In 2019, he won the Roux Scholarship, earning a place in the Roux hall of fame as the 36th Roux Scholar, before undertaking his prize stage at Frantzén in Stockholm.
His wider recognition grew further in 2022 when he was crowned Great British Menu Champion of Champions, following his run on the BBC competition.
He was also named an Acorn Award winner in 2021 and received the Master of Culinary Arts (MCA) from the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts in 2022.
Spencer stepped down from The Ritz in 2023 and later joined Atherton’s Row projects, with Row on 45 in Dubai going on to hold two Michelin stars.
Back in London, he leads the kitchen at Row on 5 on Savile Row, which was awarded a Michelin star within months of opening, cementing his track record for delivering at the highest level.
Michelin Recognition and Legacy
Row on 5 was awarded its first Michelin star in February 2025, within weeks of opening, positioning it as one of London’s most exciting fine‑dining destinations and fuelling speculation about a second star in the future.
That second star arrived the following year, at the ceremony in Dublin.
For Jason, the project is more than an accolade; it represents the culmination of decades of experience and his commitment to authenticity, seasonality and refined yet welcoming hospitality.
