The New Superfood is Black Pudding - our top 5 recipes

The Staff Canteen

It probably comes as a surprise to learn that the nation's favourite bloody sausage, black pudding, has been labelled as a superfood.

The popular breakfast food, often accompanied by eggs, bacon, beans and sausages, has now been ranked within the same list as seaweed, maca powder, kohlrabi (some sort of turnip, cabbage, crossbreed) and the incredibly irresistible; tree water. Wait, what? "Thanks to its array of potential health and beauty benefits. With only 18 calories per 100ml, birch water contains lots of important, naturally occurring nutrients, such as antioxidant vitamin C, rehydrating potassium, immune system-boosting zinc, and copper — thought to have anti-ageing benefits.

"The thin, watery sap is tapped from birch tree trunks in early spring and has been a popular drink and herbal remedy in Russia, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and even some parts of Northern China for centuries." (The Daily Mail)

I digress. According to MuscleFoods.com, black pudding is a 'superfood to watch in 2016' due to it's high protein levels. The wonder-sausage doesn't stop there, however. It's also high in iron, calcium, zinc, potassium and magnesium. Not to mention, it's virtually carb-free. The nutritional benefits of black pudding promote healthy blood cells and is a recommended snack for those suffering from anaemia. That's if you're not too squeamish to eat it.
