35 million meals claimed under Eat Out to Help Out scheme

The Staff Canteen

Hospitality businesses have claimed for over 35 million discounted meals since the Eat Out to Help Out scheme launched two weeks ago, according to numbers released by the treasury today.

Of the 85,147 restaurants taking part in the scheme, 48,000 claims have been made so far; showing that despite some reservations, the scheme has been a positive for the industry.

While numbers don't account for meals eaten but not claimed by restaurants, another two weeks could bolster confidence and give the economy a much needed boost - as 8% of the UK’s workforce relies on hospitality, accommodation and attractions for employment, and food and beverage services (pubs, restaurants, cafes etc) account for 1.8 million jobs.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak hailed his scheme a success, and said: "Today’s figures show that Britain is eating out to help out – with at least 35 million meals served up in the first two weeks alone, that is equivalent to over half of the UK taking part and supporting local jobs in the hospitality sector."

UK Hospitality's Kate Nicholls gave praise, too, but pondered whether an extension of the scheme would be worth considering:
