Top restaurants club together to show poverty the red card

Some of the biggest names on the British restaurant scene are set to face-off against each other at Farm Africa’s hotly contested charity five-a-side football tournament.

Taking place at Star City, Birmingham on Saturday 2 July 2017, the event sees the food industry come together to raise funds for Farm Africa, a charity that specialises in growing agriculture, protecting the environment and developing businesses in eastern Africa.

The celebrated event, which in past years has raised thousands for Farm Africa, provides a fantastic opportunity for chefs to blow off some steam whilst raising funds to help African farmers grow more and sell more.

The competition is fronted by award-winning chef Paul Foster, a long-time supporter of Farm Africa.
“The importance of this cause resonates with me, after visiting Kenya and Tanzania to see the important work that Farm Africa do for the communities and how they help them to become self-sufficient is very important.” says Paul Foster. “The football competition is now in its fifth year and has become a big annual event for the catering industry, it's something I love being involved in and want to help to grow even further.”

The tournament promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with 18 mixed-ability teams from some of the UK’s best restaurants taking part, including: Alderley Edge Hotel (Cheshire), Belmont Hotel (Leicester), Bistrot Pierre (Birmingham), Casamia (Bristol), Picture Restaurant (London), Portland Restaurant (Fitzrovia), Restaurant Adams (Birmingham), Restaurant Sat Bains (Nottingham), The Tame Hare (Leamington Spa) and University College Birmingham.

Only time will tell whether Michelin stars in the kitchen will translate into football stars on the pitch!
The food industry is also stepping up to the plate with Brompton Cookery School, First Choice Produce, Jubilee Recruitment, Ritter Leicester, Tonic Talent and True Foods all taking part in the competition.

There are still places available, so if you think you and your crew have got what it takes to bring home the trophy, you can register on the Farm Africa website: www.farmafrica.org/chefs-football-tournament/chefs-football-tournament or by contacting Paul Foster on Twitter (@ChefPaulFoster).
