A very merry stink-mas: Manure dumped under Ritz Christmas tree

A luxury London hotel found its festive display disrupted in dramatic fashion this week after wealth-inequality activists tipped bags of horse manure beneath its Christmas tree.

Three supporters of Take Back Power, a recently formed civil-resistance group, entered The Ritz on Wednesday shortly after midday and emptied plastic bags of manure across the lobby floor before being swiftly escorted out by staff.

Moments later the group staged a demonstration outside the Piccadilly entrance, holding placards reading “INEQUALITY IS S**T” and “TAX THE RICH.”

The stunt, which drew attention from guests and passers-by, was designed to pressure the government into creating a permanent citizens’ assembly with the authority to tax extreme wealth, the group said.

According to The Evening Standard, Ellen Redwood-Brown, a 23 year old NHS worker who took part in the action, said she had witnessed first-hand how inequality plays out in public services.

She said: “I’ve seen people dying because they couldn’t get appointments, whilst doctors are working fifteen-hour shifts, the UK has 156 billionaires. We could take away seventy-five percent of that wealth to fix Britain, and we’d still have 156 billionaires.”

Police

were called to the hotel at 12:14pm following reports of criminal damage. Officers confirmed that manure had been placed inside the lobby and that an investigation is underway. No arrests have been made.

Another activist involved, former doctor and journalist Tom Barber, sixty-five, said he believed the action was necessary to highlight what he called a dangerous concentration of power.

He said: “A small group of obscenely wealthy and ruthless individuals are enriching themselves while the gap between the haves and have-nots grows wider. We need a House of the People to make decisions for everyone’s benefit - taxing the rich, creating a fairer society and restoring faith in our democracy.”

A spokesperson for Take Back Power said the demonstration was timed to contrast the hotel’s opulent Christmas setting with 'the reality facing millions across the UK' claiming the super-rich had more than doubled their wealth since the pandemic while 'a third of UK children grow up in poverty.'

The Ritz declined to comment on the incident, though staff had cleared the lobby shortly after the protesters were removed.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact 101 quoting CAD 3120/03Nov.
