‘I’m back’ – Aldo Zilli returns at new London restaurant Undercroft
Celebrity chef Aldo Zilli is set to return to London to open Mayfair restaurant Undercroft.
The venue was originally due to be opened in the summer by Birmingham chef Brad Carter, but he stepped away from the project.
Situated in the crypts beneath St George’s church, Undercroft will offer seasonal Italian dishes, courtesy of Aldo.
In an announcement in Instagram, Undercroft posted: “A new dining experience has emerged.”
It added: “Helmed by award-winning celebrity chef Aldo Zilli, he returns to London for the first time in 20 years with a masterful menu celebrating Italy’s rich heritage. Aldo’s menu is infused with influences from over 20 regions of Italy and offers diners a true journey of taste and creativity.
“Working alongside Martin Priestnall, Undercroft
is a stage for both culinary and cultural theatrics, with an ever-changing programme of live music, piano pieces, and curated art displays.
“Above, worshippers congregate in St George’s church to share in faith. Below, we congregate in the crypts to share in the art of multisensory dining: a symphony of taste, heritage, artistry and culinary creativity.
“The experience begins now.”
Aldo himself said: “After 20 years of being missing from London, I’m back.”
Italy-born Aldo, 68, has spent much of his life in England and previously ran various restaurants, including Zilli Fish, which closed in 2012.
He has also written various books and appeared on television, on shows such as Ready Steady Cook, Celebrity MasterChef and This Morning.
