The Staff Canteen
Chefs are you too busy to worry about waste, can you even be bothered when you’re short staffed, over worked and having to deal with a million and one other things? Well perhaps now’s the time to debate it? In our #wiseuponwaste TweetUp with Sat Bains. In the recent House of Lords EU Committee release it stated that we as a nation are wasting a staggering 15 million tonnes of food here in the UK each year, with a staggering 90 million tonnes in the EU and globally 222 million tonnes of food are wasted each year that is almost the same as the net food production for the whole area sub the Sahara desert in Africa. Consider this - you or your business are paying to have your food delivered and then your waste collected, that’s a lot of miles, potentially it could mean your carbon foot print
is bigger than that of a Yeti! Still too busy to worry, that’s fine come and tells us why? If you think this is just for tree huggers and liberal lefties great we want to hear from you? Think your 30 cover restaurant has little to offer when the major multiples are throwing tonnes of food way each week, you’re probably right so come and tell us. Have you saved money from recycling, has this impacted on your businesses bottom line? Read our feature on Sat Bains, one Europe’s biggest names chefs, who as a business owner, he’s taking waste very seriously, we'll be frightened to call him a tree hugger though!!!! Follow us @CanteenTweets and join the waste debate with Sat Bains by posing your question or comment using #wiseuponwaste on Thursday 17th at 10.00am until 10.30am.
Small Contribution. Big Impact.

The Staff Canteen has always been more than a website—it’s a community, built by and for hospitality. We share the wins, the challenges, the graft, and the inspiration that keeps kitchens alive.

We believe in staying open to everyone, but creating this content takes real resources. If you’ve ever found value here—whether it’s a recipe, an interview, or a laugh when you needed it most—consider giving just £3 to keep it going.

A little from you keeps this space free for all. Let’s keep lifting the industry, together.
