Michelin-listed The Silver Birch to close in Chiswick
Michelin-listed Chiswick restaurant The Silver Birch has announced it will close its doors after what it described as “many wonderful years”, bringing an end to one of west London’s best-regarded neighbourhood restaurants.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the team said it was with “very heavy hearts” that they were sharing the news, reflecting on a restaurant that had become far more than a business. What began as an idea, they said, grew into a team, a dining room and a place they were proud to call part of the Chiswick community.
The farewell message focused on gratitude, thanking guests who had supported the restaurant over the years, whether for special occasions, midweek dinners, lunch-time glasses of wine or repeat visits as loyal regulars.
It also paid tribute to the people behind the scenes, saying the restaurant had been shaped by the energy, care and talent of the team who helped make The Silver Birch what it was.
A respected Chiswick neighbourhood restaurant
The Silver Birch built a strong reputation in Chiswick as a polished but approachable restaurant, earning recognition from the Michelin Guide and establishing itself as a destination for diners seeking refined modern cooking in a neighbourhood setting.
Its closure will be felt locally, not just because of its standing in the area, but because of the role it played within the wider London restaurant landscape. The statement thanked Chiswick neighbours, regular guests and those who travelled across London and further afield to dine there, underlining the reach the restaurant had built during its run.
While no reason for the closure has been publicly given, the announcement arrives at a time when many independent restaurants continue to face difficult trading conditions, with operators across the sector navigating sustained pressure on costs, staffing and margins. In its own message, however, The Silver Birch kept the focus firmly on appreciation rather than explanation.
The team said they were “immensely proud” of what they had built and grateful for every service, every conversation and every person who walked through the door.
Nathan Cornwell joined as head chef in 2023
The closure also marks the end of the chapter that followed the arrival of Nathan Cornwell as head chef in 2023, around the time of the restaurant’s second birthday.
When Nathan joined The Silver Birch, he brought with him experience from some of the most respected kitchens in Europe, including The Barn at Moor Hall, where he worked alongside Mark Birchall, as well as Kitchen W8, Geranium, Kadeau, Oaxen Krog and Le Champignon Sauvage.
At the time of his appointment, the restaurant said his food would reflect a refined, ingredient-led style shaped by hyper-seasonal produce, foraging, and techniques such as pickling and preserving. It was a direction that aligned closely with The Silver Birch’s identity: ambitious cooking delivered within the framework of a warm, neighbourhood restaurant.
That combination helped the restaurant carve out a distinct position in Chiswick, balancing technical skill with accessibility and local appeal.
A heartfelt goodbye
In its final message, The Silver Birch made clear that the story of the restaurant was about people as much as plates.
“Restaurants are nothing without their teams,” the statement said, while also thanking suppliers who trusted the restaurant with their produce over the years.
For Chiswick, the closure marks the loss of a respected independent restaurant with Michelin recognition and a strong local following.
For those who built and supported it, the final sentiment was one of pride, gratitude and thanks for being part of the journey.
