Roti King heads to Scotland with new Edinburgh opening

Roti King is set to open its first site outside England, with a new restaurant launching in Edinburgh’s city centre in December.

Located just off Princes Street, the Malaysian street food brand will bring its signature roti canai and hand-stretched breads to one of the capital’s busiest dining districts.

The new restaurant will mirror the experience of Roti King’s London sites, offering diners a view into the open kitchen where chefs hand-stretch roti to order.

The menu will feature the brand’s well-known roti canai, served with dhal, chicken, mutton or fish kari, alongside dishes such as char kway teow and Malaysian fried chicken marinated with garlic, ginger and lemongrass before being crisped in cornstarch and rice flour.

A design rooted in Malaysian craft

The Edinburgh site will retain elements of the original building façade and exposed brickwork. According to the team, the interior will include bespoke murals and graffiti inspired by Malaysian street culture, designed to reflect the craft and energy of the country’s markets.

Founder Sugen Gopal’s journey

Founder and chef Sugen Gopal first moved to the UK in 2004. His early career saw him running a small kiosk in Oriental City in Colindale, before building a following through pop-ups and residencies. He opened the first Roti King restaurant in Euston in 2014, which has since expanded to four London sites in Waterloo, Battersea and Spitalfields.

Sugen published his debut cookbook, Roti King: Malaysian Street Food at Home, a collection inspired by the flavours that shaped both his childhood and his restaurant’s cult following.

Continuing a nationwide expansion

The Edinburgh opening follows recent launches in Brighton and Spitalfields and forms part of a wider plan to expand Roti King to cities with strong independent food scenes.

Partnership with Children First

As part of the launch, Roti King will partner with the Edinburgh charity Children First. From December to February, donations to the restaurant’s in-house giving tree will be matched with food donations from the Roti King team. The support will go towards helping families access warm meals or taking part in roti-making sessions with staff.

Opening details

Roti King Edinburgh will open daily from December 12. Opening hours will run Sunday to Thursday from 11:30am to 10pm, and Friday to Saturday from 11:30am to 11pm.

The restaurant will operate on a walk-in only basis, with takeaway and delivery due to launch shortly after opening.
