The Star Inn the City hoping for quick reopening after kitchen fire

The Star Inn the City, York, has been forced to close after a fire broke out in the kitchen in the early hours of Friday, November 9.

No one was injured in the blaze and chef owner, Andrew Pern has taken to twitter to thank the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crew and the pedestrian on the bridge who called it in.

Andrew said: "Our great staff will have the place open as soon as possible. We will hope to have the bar area open for next weekend for drinks and light snacks only."

The team have received huge support following the blaze, restaurant’s operations director Matt Hunter

tweeted: "I’m absolutely humbled at all the kind messages we have received today. I do take everything about personally, it’s taken a while to settle in & we’re comforted by all the love we have been sent from guests, peers & those in the trade I admire greatly."

The fire was contained and confined to the kitchen area and the roof void but it caused severe fire damage. From preliminary inquiries, the cause does not appear to be suspicious.

Star in the City is one of four restaurants owned by Andrew alongside the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome, Star Inn the Harbour in Whitby and Mr P’s Curious Tavern.

Andrew has announced following the fire that Mr P’s Curious Tavern will extend its opening hours and offer dishes in the restaurant’s style, and a guest chef evening with Atul Kochhar will be moved to Star Inn the Harbour with coaches provided for guests.
