Tom Aikens to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity

The Staff Canteen

Tom Aikens is embarking on an eight-day charitable challenge and is encouraging others to take part.

He will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in October later this year to raise money for Only a Pavement Away.

Only a Pavement Away is a charity established in 2018 and dedicated to supporting people looking to rebuild their lives through employment opportunities in hospitality.

The charity connects forward thinking hospitality employers with charity referral partners to enable & upskill individuals into work, supporting people at risk of homelessness and anyone facing barriers to employment outside of their control.

Tom has taken part in many challenge events in the past including the 25th Marathon des Sables in the Sahara desert, three London Marathons and multiple cycle races.

The British chef is also encouraging other people in the industry to join him and raise as much money as possible.

Tom has worked with some of the most world-renowned chefs including Pierre Koffmann, Joel Robuchon and Gerard Boyer.

He also became the youngest British chef to be awarded two Michelin stars at 26 years old and has restaurants in London, Jakarta and Tokyo.

Tom said: “ this October I’m excited to let you know that I will be leading an incredible challenge—climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Only A Pavement Away, the homelessness charity I am proud to support as a patron, this is a charity that is close to my heart as not only are they helping the homeless but also trying to get them back into work through hospitality.

"It’s been a while since I embarked on a thrill-seeking adventure, so I thought it was the perfect time to tick something major off my bucket list, whilst supporting a cause close to my heart. This event will help raise vital funds for individuals facing homelessness, as well as those transitioning from prison or military service. The charity’s mission is to help these vulnerable people secure long-term, stable employment in the hospitality industry, fostering inclusivity and empowerment.

"I would obviously be thrilled if you would like to join me on this unforgettable trek, and there are still some spots available!

"You'll be welcomed at the beautiful Weru Weru River Lodge and treated to a three-course meal prepared by yours truly. During the climb, I’ll also be cooking a hearty, nourishing meal over a gas campfire to help you unwind and refuel after each day’s adventure—all while taking in the stunning views.

"The 8-day journey will be guided by mountain expert Jonathan Kattenberg from Walking With My Bear. With experience trekking in the Sahara, Yukon, Alaska, Nepal, the Indian Himalayas, Tanzania, and more (including training for a South Pole world record), I know I’ll be in safe hands!

"For those of you that can’t or have no desire to join, I would be so grateful if you could please support me with a donation to help fund this important work. Every contribution counts in our mission to change lives and provide much-needed opportunities.

"Thank you so much for considering supporting this mission, whether through a donation or by joining the trek. I truly appreciate it!"
