Tommy Banks reviving UK pubs with new business venture
Restaurateur and TV chef Tommy Banks has launched his latest venture, Jeopardy Hospitality, aiming to breathe new life into pubs across the UK.
Tommy runs Michelin-starred The Black Swan at Oldstead, Roots in York and The Abbey Inn at Byland, as well as a food delivery service Made In Olstead and a recent collaboration with Sunderland AFC on matchday catering.
And he has now set up a new business, alongside Matthew Lockwood, brother James Banks and businessman Neil Armstrong.
The group’s first project will see them restore and reopen The General Tarleton in North Yorkshire later this summer.
Tommy Banks: From Michelin Stars to Pub Revival
The aim of Jeopardy Hospitality is to provide restoration for various cherished venues to communities across the country, with the focus being on pubs.
The General Tarleton is situated in the village of Knaresborough, 10 minutes from Harrogate, sitting within an 18th-century coaching inn.
Jeopardy Hospitality will run independently from The Tommy Banks Group and provide career opportunities to the communities where each pub is located.
Tommy explained: “Jeopardy Hospitality is an exciting new step for us, bringing new life to places with real history, like The General Tarleton.
“We’re not just reopening pubs, but
working to restore them with care and respect for what makes them unique.
“It’s about creating spaces where people can come together, enjoy good food, and connect with local heritage.
“While times are challenging, we believe that growth is important for staying resilient in the UK hospitality scene.
“With rising costs and changing regulations, expanding helps us make the most of our resources.
“Together with Matt, James, and Neil, we’re focused on creating something that’s grounded in community.”

TV and Stadium Projects: Great British Menu & Sunderland AFC
As well as his award-winning restaurants, Tommy’s recent ventures have seen him work as executive chef at Saltmoore, alongside his television work.
Tommy again appeared as a veteran judge in the recent BBC series Great British Menu.
This is after being one of the winners of the competition in 2016, 2017 and 2020.
His restaurant Roots holds a Michelin star, while The Black Swan holds both a Michelin star and Michelin green star, where Alice Power runs the kitchen day-to-day.
The Abbey Inn was last year voted as having the best Sunday roast in Britain.
At Sunderland AFC, Black Cats fan Tommy will offer a three-course à la carte menu on matchdays at Stadium of Light.

We believe in staying open to everyone, but creating this content takes real resources. If you’ve ever found value here—whether it’s a recipe, an interview, or a laugh when you needed it most—consider giving just £3 to keep it going.
