Tributes pour in for photographer and chef favourite Stephen Perez

The Staff Canteen

Stephen Perez, who has photographed some of the best chefs in the UK and their dishes, has sadly passed away.

The news of his death which happened suddenly on Tuesday, October 24 2017 has triggered an outpouring of tributes to the 47 year-old food photographer by chefs around the country.

Just a few month's ago Stephen offered his advice to The Staff Canteen on how to take the best food images, saying: "Lighting is the most important part in food photography. I recommend taking your snaps by a window but avoid direct sunlight as this will be to harsh. Never use a flash. If more light is required, use the available light from the window by bouncing light back onto the food with a white card or foil."

Here are just some of the messages which have been posted on Instagram, our thoughts are with his family at this time and as many have already said he will be missed.

Small Contribution. Big Impact.

The Staff Canteen has always been more than a website—it’s a community, built by and for hospitality. We share the wins, the challenges, the graft, and the inspiration that keeps kitchens alive.

We believe in staying open to everyone, but creating this content takes real resources. If you’ve ever found value here—whether it’s a recipe, an interview, or a laugh when you needed it most—consider giving just £3 to keep it going.

A little from you keeps this space free for all. Let’s keep lifting the industry, together.
