#Wiseuponwaste Tweetup

The Staff Canteen
Earlier today we hosted a Tweetup on the issue of food waste to see if people are concerned by how much we are wasting each year and to see if anyone is doing anything about it. We had a great response from everyone involved, with many offering differing viewpoints on the argument. From freezing leftovers to the costs involved in waste disposal units have a look below at what themes came out of this great discussion: One of the key facts highlighted by Hayden Groves was :   Closed Loop Organics suggested a way to help tackle this problem by talking to your suppliers and reducing wastage before it comes in to the kitchen.   We had Sat Bains also with us who owns the first restaurant in the UK to install a new piece of technology to reduce food waste. The machine, called a ‘Closed Loop Organics unit’, reduces food waste by up to 90% by using special microbes kept at an optimised temperature and with a steady supply of oxygen.   Footprint Media said to help the problem we need to be more vocal with what is going on and publicise the issue further:   The issue was also brought around to supermarkets and what they are doing as they certainly have a part to play. In terms of what they are doing with their waste both Sainsburys and Asda both have found their solution to the problem:   Thank you to everyone that was involved and if you would like to see what else was covered in the hour debate then search on Twitter using the hashtag #wiseuponwaste.
