Eight strangers, one secret ingredient...

Eight strangers, one secret ingredient...

We gathered together eight strangers and set them the task of working out the secret ingredient in six different dishes.

Each was filmed individually so that there was no chance of someone finding out before their turn.

The secret ingredient? Pure maple syrup from Quebec, Canada.

Each person was served ‘taster’ portions of recipes created by our chef, David Colcombe (all of which are available on the website); in each case their third spoon simply contained pure maple syrup.

The tasters were:
• Free range poached chicken with a maple and grape dressing
• Cream cheese fritters with English summer cherries and maple syrup
• Cottage pie with maple caramelised seasonal vegetables
• Seared sea trout with maple mustard mayonnaise
• Maple and carrot cake
• Maple glazed ham

‘Sweet’, ‘smoky’, ‘toffee’ were just some of the adjectives used to describe the dishes, while one lady was sure she could taste coffee when presented with the spoonful of pure maple syrup!

One man initially said he didn’t like the taste of the pure maple syrup; given time, however, he began to develop a real taste for it!

Our taste testers soon realised that maple syrup is a truly versatile ingredient, which can be used in sweet and savoury dishes; it is a pure, natural product full of antioxidants and minerals.
