Alfresco at Alfred Works brings outdoor dining and a dedicated space for sports fans to the city centre
A dynamic new outdoor space and sports bar will open at Alfred Works in early May. To mark the occasion, the opening weekend will feature a programme of drop-in events and workshops, offering guests a preview of what’s to come at Alfresco.
Bringing together alfresco dining, live sports, street food, a children’s play areas, and flexible event spaces in the heart of Digbeth.
At the centre of the concept is an indoor sports bar built for watching live sport and socialising. With large format screens, capacity for up to 300 guests, and a lively atmosphere, it brings a vibrant new destination to Floodgate Street for everything from big games to relaxed catchups.
Alongside the sports bar, guests can enjoy table tennis and an outdoor cinema, creating a varied indoor-outdoor entertainment experience. A permanent fried chicken kitchen, housed in a container unit, will operate year-round to provide a consistent food and drink option, whatever the weather.
Extending from the sports bar, there is a large outdoor area that will bring a vibrant space to Digbeth, designed for food, music and socialising. This space will include three outdoor kitchen units, with a focus on BBQ-style dining, communal seating areas, a DJ booth for events and live sets and flexible activity spaces for all.
The outdoor area at Alfresco at Alfred Works will be shaded by a large canopy structure along the edges, providing shelter from the rain and shade from the sun. While the outdoor kitchens and event programming will be seasonal, the space itself will remain accessible year-round.
Fun for the whole family, Alfresco will have a dedicated children’s play area, located at the far end of the site. Taking centre stage, a ship-themed climbing area, complete with interactive and sensory elements, will provide a safe space for play and exploration. The children’s area and surrounding seating will remain open year-round, even when the outdoor kitchens are closed, ensuring the venue remains inclusive and family-friendly in all seasons.
Bringing everything together, the new spaces add to what people already love about Alfred Works, great food, independent kitchens and a relaxed, social atmosphere. With the addition of Alfresco, there’s now even more to enjoy, from live sport and street food to outdoor events and family-friendly spaces. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite, meeting friends for drinks or making a day of it with the kids, it’s all designed to make Alfred Works a go-to spot in Birmingham.
