John Campbell is chef owner of the one Michelin starred, Woodspeen in Berkshire.

John Campbell, who was born in Liverpool, started cooking with his Nan from an early age. She taught him the importance of quality ingredients and the joy that cooking can bring.

Biography

From a youngster, John knew he wanted to be a chef beginning his career cooking in some of Europe’s finest kitchens. He went on to be a senior sous chef in London’s Grosvenor House Hotel before taking his first head chef job at the BBC’s residential training centre in Evesham in 1995.

He later moved to Lords of the Manor in Upper Slaughter in 1997 as head chef where he maintained its Michelin star and progressed the restaurant to achieve four rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide.

Three years after starting at Lords of the Manor he took on the added responsibility of becoming director of food and beverage. In 2002 John moved to the Vineyard in Newbury where he added a fourth rosette to the restaurant and kept hold of the Michelin star. As well as cooking within the restaurant John also teaches in the cookery school located on the same premises.

He is keen to keep cooking in the family and still cooks with his children when he can.

Awards and accolades

John achieved his first Michelin star when working in Lords of the Manor in 1998. Later after being at The Vineyard for five years he achieved two Michelin stars. John was awarded a Michelin star for his very own restaurant, The Woodspeen in 2015 which has retained every year since.

Other interests and appearances

John is a regular guest on BBC MasterChef: The Professionals and Saturday kitchen. He has numerous cookery books that many students use in the hope of becoming professionals themselves. John’s recipes and articles have appeared in magazines and newspapers including The Sunday Times, The Observer Food Monthly, Food Arts and Hotelkeeper.

The Woodspeen Cookery School

The Woodspeen Cookery School was founded by John Campbell in 2014 on the same site as his restaurant The Woodspeen. The school offers students the opportunity to learn culinary skills from John Campbell himself or chefs trained under him. John has been involved in the school since day one from designing its interior and kitchen area, organising courses and locating vegetable patches.

The courses run all throughout the week including weekends and evenings. Much like the restaurant, the school also uses fresh local seasonal ingredients grown on the site where possible.
