Casamia was originally set up in 1999 by Paco and Sue Sanchez-Iglesias. Along with his brother, Peter and Jonray would often help out in the kitchen every now and again as teenagers with Peter taking over the reins of the kitchen in the absence of the head chef.

In 2004 the pair set out to open their own restaurant, Fratelli in Cheltenham. However, they returned to Bristol in 2006 when they took over the running of Casamia from their parents.

Awards and accolades

After three years, the duo’s hard work finally started to pay off as they were awarded their first Michelin star. From there the restaurant has gone from strength-to-strength with the siblings being awarded joint Chefs of the Year in the Good Food Guide 2015, an incredible 5 rosettes from the AA Restaurant Guide in 2016 and more recently a spot in the Good Food Guide 2018 at no. 10 which also named Peter its Chef of the Year.

In late 2015, 32 year old Jonray Sanchez-Iglesias lost his battle with skin cancer.

Despite his brother’s unfortunate passing the chef continued with his plans to move the restaurant to allow for expansion. In 2016 he relocated Casamia from Westbury-on-Trym to the old Bristol General Hospital site by the canal. Despite the move, Peter still managed to retain the restaurant’s coveted star in the Michelin Guide.

That same year, Peter and his family launched Pi Shop pizzeria and Paco Tapas, next door to Casamia.

Paco Tapas

Paco Tapas opened in November 2016. Named after his father - who helped to design the menu - it is a vibrant tapas bar, based on the intimate restaurants of the Basque region. Described on their website as "bringing a taste of Andalusia to Bristol", the menu showcases the best of Spanish ingredients, like jamón, padrón peppers and Cabinero prawns from the Canary Islands. Less than a year after opening, the restaurant was awarded a star in the Michelin Guide UK 2018.

Food style

Despite its Italian name and being run by a Spanish chef, Casamia actually specialises in serving modern British Food. Peter’s multi course tasting menu changes four times a year and is heavily inspired by the ‘individuality, multicultural and creative vibes’ of Bristol.

Television appearances

In 2013, Peter represented the South West on BBC2’s Great British Menu. Peter has also made regular appearances with Jonray on BBC One’s cooking show, Saturday Kitchen.
