Chef Career Advice

Based on his extensive experience working in the Culinary Industry, Head Chef, Steve Groves offers his advice to aspiring Chefs in an attempt to help them on their journey up the career ladder:

Hi, I'm Steve Groves, Head Chef at Roux, Parliament square my advice to anyone just leaving college about to embark on a career in the industry would be to go and work at the best place you possibly can, really get your Head down, work hard and enjoy it, I think it's really important you enjoy this career it's long hours and if you don't enjoy it it's a long hard slog. I think the industry over the last sort of few years has changed quite a lot and it’s becoming a much better place to work.

So I think you can expect a really rewarding career if you're that kind of person that's really into giving good hospitality and like I say it can be very rewarding.

The best bit of careers advice I’ve ever been given is run your own race don't worry about what other people are doing, concentrate on your career and what's best for you and make moves based on that.

When a young Chef applies for a job with us the main thing I’m looking for is the right attitude I want someone that's going to come in be willing to learn be keen and enthusiastic and really get involved in what were doing a career with us at Roux Parliament Square I feel it would be a very rewarding career I like to help mentor the young Chefs that come to our kitchen I like them to, when they move on from us, to go and work somewhere at a higher level think it's really nice to have those kinds of stepping stones in your career.
