This week's market report from Wild Harvest features purple cauliflower, ceps and wet cherries as well as a whole host of other fruit and vegetables currently in season which you can see below:

Wild Mushrooms

Girolles are coming from Romania now as Bulgaria is too warm. The next quality hike and price drop will occur when Lithuanian, Belarusian, Polish and Scottish crops kick in, in a matter of weeks. That said the Romanian specimens are pretty good. Bulgaria is still producing mousseron, but not for long. The morel season in the US is about to close. It’s a brave buyer who invests in fresh cep at anytime of the year due to infestation issues, which can only become clear in transit. Summer cep requires a real leap of faith. One way to reduce risk is by buying the fresh product sliced. This is what we are doing from Romania this week.

Truffles

Summer truffles are now close to their best and cheapest.

Fruits

Europe is now producing outstanding seasonal fruit. British strawberries are now more than just edible. Charentais melons are now coming from Spain and we are enjoying healthy sales of yellow fleshed watermelons. Red gooseberries are pleasing our customers for both savoury and sweet applications. We are importing both wild strawberries and the cross bred larger and more succulent wild strawberry variety

Not Right Now

mara des bois from France. Strasberries and pineberries provide exotic options too. Gariguette strawberries continue. Apricots, cherries, peaches and nectarines are now all lovely.

Vegetables

What has been a solid English asparagus season is likely to last until the end of June.

Borlotti beans are excellent. We expect that coco beans will be the next fresh pulse we offer at the start of July. Our baby veg range (in leaf) now covers three colours of beet, three of carrot, fennel, leeks and turnips. Wild leek seed pods have given way to wild garlic pods or 'bobbles' as we choose to call them. Nettles are still excellent but will burn out soon. Broad beans and fresh peas in the pod are excellent. We are about to switch supply to our green and pleasant land. Purple cauliflower

Early crop purple and golden cauliflowers are starting in France. Can the humble cauli get any more fashionable? I’m going to have a go at roasting one to intensify the flavour.
