JP McMahon's Tartare restaurant to close

The Staff Canteen

Michelin-starred chef JP McMahon has announced the closure of Tartare restaurant following multiple industry-wide challenges.

The restaurant, which focuses on small plates and natural wines, will cease trading on September 4.

In a tweet JP said: “It is with sadness that we must announce that we are closing our beautiful @tartaregalway on 4th September. We are very proud of what we achieved over the past 5 years. We want to thank our customers and our loyal regulars. And most importantly we want to thank our staff.”

Challenges across the industry

In a recent interview with the Irish Independent, JP revealed that decision follows multiple industry-wide challenges including Covid, the Ukraine War

and the ongoing cost of living crisis.

He said: “Right now, there is a lot of soul-searching going on amongst restaurant owners. Hit by a combination of Covid, the war in Ukraine, staffing issues, the rising costs of ingredients and power, and public anxiety about disposable income.”

JP confirmed that his Michelin-starred Aniar and Cava Bodega tapas restaurants will remain open for business following Tartare’s closure next month.

Tartare’s closure comes after 5 years of service, with the restaurant being awarded a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide in October 2018.
