Former Le Meurice head chef, Yu Sugimoto joins the two Michelin starred restaurant, The Square.

Yu will lead the kitchen team at one of the UK’s most prestigious Michelin-starred establishments, located in Mayfair, London. A first for the industry, Yu is a Japanese chef taking charge of one of the leading European restaurants in the UK.

This move follows Marlon Abela’s acquisition of The Square in March 2016. Marlon, Chairman of MARC (Marlon Abela Restaurant Corporation) Ltd., looks forward to running the distinguished restaurant and working with its talented staff.

Marlon said: “I am delighted to welcome The Square into our family of restaurants. I have always admired its strong commitment to modern fine dining, devotion to quality and use of the finest, locally-sourced British ingredients.

“The team’s approach to rigorous seasonality, passion for wine and dedication to delivering service excellence is in line with our core values”.

During his career, Yu has amassed a wealth of experience from some of Europe’s best restaurants. Born in Japan, he worked at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo before moving to France to join two Michelin star Hôtel de Carantec. Yu then spent nine years at three Michelin star restaurant Le Meurice in Paris, where he progressed to head chef; a role he commanded for four years under the guidance of revered chefs Yannick Alléno and Alain Ducasse. Prior to his move to the UK, he was Chef de Cuisine at two Michelin star restaurant L’Espérance Marc Meneau in France.

First opened in 1991, The Square has a long history as one of the UK’s finest restaurants, having retained its two Michelin stars for nineteen consecutive years since being awarded them by the Michelin Guide in 1998.
