Toasted ham & cheese from Alan Bird

This is a recipe for toasted ham and cheese from chef Alan Bird of Bird of Smithfield, in association with RATIONAL UK.

Ingredients

  • 8 x slices of white bloomer or white loaf (1 cm in thickness)
  • 100g softened unsalted butter
  • 4 slices of thinly sliced cooked ham
  • 4 slices of mature Cheddar cheese (Montgomery’s or Quickes or Keens)
  • Directions:
  • Pre-heat the oven to 190/200 degrees centigrade on full fan.

Method

Whilst the oven heats up, butter both sides of all 8 slices of bread.

Assemble the slices of ham and cheese between the two slices of bread and place onto a sheet of greaseproof paper. This will stop the bread potentially sticking to the tray.

Place into the hot oven for 6 minutes or until golden brown.

Carefully remove from the oven, slice into two and serve whilst hot with a little salad and piccalilli.
