We feature some of the best chef’s in the world on The Staff Canteen but where would they be without their kitchen porter?
We thought it was time to celebrate the unsung heroes of the kitchen in a new monthly feature, KP of the Month, and this month it is Sarin Anchhangbo who currently works at Restaurant 56 at Sudbury House Hotel which has 3 rosettes from the AA Restaurant Guide and is home to executive head chef, Andrew Scott, a former Great British Menu contestant.
Sarin was nominated by head chef and MasterChef: The Professionals finalist, Nick Bennett, who said: “I nominated Sarin for KP of the month as I’ve never had such a happy, smiley pot wash! He is a pleasure to work with and this is a great way of us showing our appreciation for all his hard work.”
Team at Restaurant 56
How long have you worked at Restaurant 56 for?
I have been with Restaurant 56 for year.
Why did you want to be a KP?
I had a few shifts after housekeeping and I preffered the kitchen so I stayed there.
Are you interested in cooking or happy to stay as a KP?
I like to cook at home but couldn’t do it professionally.
What is it like to work at Restaurant 56, and what are Andrew and Nick like as bosses?
They are always smiling and happy. It's a fun kitchen!
As a KP, what’s the most annoying thing chefs do in the kitchen?
When they give me tubs with food still in. I don’t know if I should throw it or if they need it!
KP Heaven and Hell
Heaven
It's great fun working with the chefs, I feel part of the team and I am always happy at work.
Hell
It is a dirty job at times, I’m forever going home with stains and dirty fingers and the coffee order is massive!
Is there anything chefs could do to make your life easier?
More tastings!
So you get to try the food? That must be a perk!
Yes I do and it just makes you more hungry! You know you’ve done a good job if you get some food.
Do you have a favourite dish you have tried at the restaurant?
I loved the duck with squash, maple and coffee, I got to try it a few weeks ago.
Would you encourage other chefs to nominate and celebrate their KPs?
