KCCJ: 8 years of Catering Consultancy Services at MCC Lords Cricket Club

There was a time, not that long ago either, when businesses embarking on large scale catering developments had both the time and the budget to engage the services of a consultant whose only involvement in the project was just that, consultancy. However, times have changed and the focus is now on delivering projects quickly, as well as efficiently. Let’s not forget, every day that a catering outlet is not operational is a day’s lost revenue, so being able to provide a turnkey operation that results in the least possible downtime is the Holy Grail for the operator.

KCCJ was one of the first companies to identify the benefits of providing its customers with a service that included consultancy along with construction, design, specification and catering equipment supply following on as a natural process. It has served the company well, particularly at Lords Cricket Ground where KCCJ have been called upon to work on various projects over the past eight years. The current challenge at Lords is particularly unique: namely creating food and beverage facilities that are fit for the 21st century consumer without compromising the history and tradition of such an iconic venue.

Working alongside some of the world’s most innovative architectural practices KCCJ has been involved in the planning and re-development of: the new Warner stand, including the members prime dining location, the Pelham restaurant; the main grandstand, including the hospitality kitchens and ground floor concessions; the Compton and Edrich stands, where there are plans to add another tier within which there will be two restaurants as well as bars and concessions; and, most recently, discussions surrounding a project to update the Tavern stand and the famous Thomas Lord building.

Working alongside the architects, the Lords ops team and a wide variety of other key stakeholders, KCCJ has been instrumental in creating a series of highly detailed proposals that set out the design and specification for each project and, in each case, deliver the best possible solution within the constraints of space, time and cost. These proposals, fine-tuned in conjunction with the client and architect, will contain specification documents and drawings which are then issued to market for competitive tender.

It’s at this point that KCCJ has a real competitive advantage because its in-house projects team is perfectly placed to follow up the work carried out by the consultancy team by quoting against the tender. If successful, this allows KCCJ to provide a seamless transition from consultancy to implementation. With no handover period, and the whole project being managed under one roof at KCCJ, the potential to reduce the time taken to complete the project is huge meaning that downtime is reduced, and the operation is up and running and making money as soon as possible.

With the assistance of KCCJ the food and beverage facilities right around Lords have become a vital, profit making enterprise worthy of any sporting venue. In a competitive world, where sporting venues cannot rely solely upon match day income to survive, the importance of first class dining and hospitality facilities cannot be underestimated.
