Essential Cuisine’s Development Chef Jonathan has adopted a school in support of Chefs Adopt a School, organised by Academy of Culinary Arts.
The programme asks chefs to visit a school once a term, and deliver food education to a set year group on taste, healthy eating, nutrition and hygiene.
Jonathan has partnered up with his local school Alveston C of E Primary School in Stratford upon Avon, to educate a Year 4 class on where food comes from and how it’s grown.
One of the Year 4’s who took part in the demonstration said “we found out that we taste different flavours on different parts of our tongue. We also looked at where different types of food come from.”
During his first visit, Jonathan taught the kids how their senses can be tricked, by tasting jellies that were misleading in colour. “The red one tasted like lemon and the green one tasted like vanilla” said a year 4 pupil.
Jonathan will work with the school and re-visit the Year 4’s before the end of term. He will then restart the process with the next intake of Year 4’s and continue to teach the next generation about the importance of food nutrition.
Jonathan said “the kids were fantastic; they were really knowledgeable about food. I’m looking forward to the next session which will hopefully be a practical session to give the kids a chance to really get stuck in.”
