The Best Series Yet

Major International and the Craft Guild of Chefs work in partnership to organise the annual Major Culinary Challenge and Major Series of Display Classes. The national competition, open to junior and senior chefs of varying skill levels, take place throughout the year at venues around the country and culminate in the live final, this year to be held at the Restaurant Show in October 2014.

The first of this years’ Major Series heats was held on Friday 7 February at South Devon College. It was amazingly well attended, with a staggering 142 entries. The standard was extraordinarily high and the number of gold’s awarded to competitors was the highest in any Major Series competition to date. This not only proves that this event is growing in popularity year on year but it really is attracting the best young chefs in the industry.

“The standard of the students is rising every year at the Major Series and we were thrilled with the outcome. We witnessed and tasted some fantastic recipes, all using the Major products and the chefs did exceptionally well. I know we say it every year, but once again the organisation of this heat at South Devon College was handled with incredible professionalism and efficiency and I’d like to personally thank all involved. We really can’t wait to see what the rest of the 2014 heats bring!!” Comments Brian Eastment, Executive Development Chef of Major International.

This year’s competition is slightly different to the previous years in that there has been a New Street food class added, mirroring the new revolution taking the country by storm. Competitors are given 30 minutes to cook and present two portions of a wok or noodle dish based on the Major ‘Simply Taste’ concept.

“The aim of the Major Series is not only to promote culinary excellent but also to nurture talent. Today this is seen as one of the UK’s premier competitions and it’s a great way to encourage creativity and showcase your skills. We’re interested to see what Street Food dishes the competitors bring using the Mari Base marinades. The possibilities are endless so show us your what you’ve got!” comments David Bryant, Managing Director of Major International.
