Peter Gordon's The Providores & Tapa Room is set to close

The Staff Canteen

The Providores & Tapa Room, owned by chef Peter Gordon, will close in just over two months as he and the restaurant's general manager, Michael McGrath, look to pursue other projects.

The so-called godfather of modern fusion cooking shared the news on his Instagram account.

He said: "We’ve been trading almost 18 years now and it’s time for new adventures for us both."

"So, you’d better make plans to come visit us for a meal, coffee, wine or cheese scone for the remaining 70 days or so while you can! Big aroha (love) from us both and thanks for your support over the years."

The New Zealand chef of Maori and Scottish descent came to the UK in the late nineties, launching The Sugar Club, having opened the original venue in Wellington in 1986.

He opened The Providores & Tapa Room on Marylebone High Street in 2001, Dine by Peter Gordon at SKYCITY Hotel in Auckland in 2004 (which closed to make way for  tapas bar Bellota in 2006) and the now closed Kopapa in Covent Garden in 2010.

As well as owning and running restaurants, Peter Gordon is a consultant and an investor, a founding partner of artisan doughnut company Crosstown Doughnuts and backs the now famous burger chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

In 2009, to reward his skills as a chef and restaurateur as well as his active role in fundraising more than £5 million for leukaemia research,  he was awarded Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, their equivalent of an OBE.
